Orpheus

Orpheus is a Melodic Death Metal band from the northern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia.

The band began as a side project for Chris when he and good friend Joao decided to start a band together at the beginning of 2008. The band was to be in the vein of great Melodic Death acts such as At The Gates, In Flames and Dark Tranquillity but with Australian aggression and flare.

After recruiting Chris’ brother Matthew on drums after some months of planning, good friends Sasha and Milky (Adam) were auditioned on Keyboard and Bass respectively. During the first practice and audition, the bands first song was written and it was obvious that the members were perfect for the band. And so the line-up was complete.

In the first quarter of 08’ four tracks were written and perfected along with a few covers in order to play some gigs. With MySpace support already established, the first gig looked set to draw in a large crowd.

In May of 08’ Orpheus played their very first gig to a crowd of over three-hundred at a local FReeZA event and brought in over sixty people alone. This was a big boost for the band’s confidence and inspiration. In June more songs were written and Orpheus played at the Emergenza first heat, progressing through to the second round.

In September, Orpheus then headlined a FReeZA battle of the bands and drew in over one-hundred and twenty people. A big achievement for a band that had only played five gigs at that point.

Shortly after the gig, Chris secured an endorsement with MESA Boogie amplification which was a huge achievement for him after such a short time with the band. Earlier in 09’ Chris secured an endorsement with Jackson Guitar to further the professional backing the band is now receiving.

Since then, Orpheus has played many gigs in and around the Melbourne area, along with the multiple headlining of local FReeZA gigs. With an overwhelming following for such a new act, the band is confident and persistent in gaining even more attention and fans to hopefully become a band of international caliber.

By the middle of 2009, Orpheus had seen over 20 gigs, written 10 songs, accumulated substantial MySpace support, played to crowds of well over 100 people for the band alone and have had a great amount of support from local bands, organizers and MOST importantly- the fans.

On July 3rd we released our EP, “So It Begins...” to over 400 people and are writing new songs for a full-length release in 2011. This year we plan to play on as many stages as possible, to impress, invigorate and motivate more metal fans each time and gain valuable fans in the process. As the confident and dedicated people/ musicians we are, we plan to take this band to the top and let nothing stop us.

This may be a thought, or hope, shared by many bands everywhere, but we will follow it through to the end.
