    What annoyed me about the most extreme employer.
    End of summer. Back-to-school shopping season. A line up to the doors and sometimes even outside.
    From EVERY shopper, snatch a discount card. No? Persuade them to get one. Didn't get one? Coax the next person in line. Didn't coax? At least scan yours (but quietly).
    And this is after, just two weeks earlier, the whole store + the manager got a scolding for, you know, fiddling with the discount card usage statistics.
    Unteachable...

    If this were ordinary stupidity, I wouldn't get angry – I'm used to ordinary stupidity.
    But this is fractal stupidity that amplifies itself.

    You can force it, though. In our murky times, five kopecks is still five kopecks. The right words for this have been known for twenty centuries.

    But.

    1. Season of increased sales at full price. The customer comes on their own and doesn't flinch over money.
    My salesmanship tells me that at this time off‑season promotional methods – including bonus cards – go to hell. EXACTLY because the customer is spawning. BY HIMSELF.
    Every second of hesitation over nonsense is lost revenue.

    2. Due to the nature of the bonus card (buy something now – get a discount on the next purchase), aggressively pushing it during such a spawning season actually reduces revenue. Both in the short and long term.
    Because a client married to the bonus card starts to mull over the idea “maybe I’ll just wait and shop later with a discount.”
    Every second of doubt about a future discount instead of upselling something relevant is lost revenue.

    3. For several days in a row, there was a real line sticking out of the doors in our rusty hangar.
    Introducing a bonus card doubles the time it takes to serve a customer. At least. Yes, half are already crippled, i.e., real time losses – about +20‑25% per customer, give or take.
    But in that time you could serve more customers. Otherwise they’ll get tired of waiting and go somewhere with no line.
    Every customer tired of waiting is lost revenue.

    And so on, and so on.

    If we had a full staff of normal people, we could do something about it. But we have two disabled people sleeping in the back room, alas.

    In the end I brought profit and left.
    The other stores met the targets for the discount card. And then for the New Year encore they shot themselves in the foot.

    But revenue‑wise, that really hit us.
    As a result, a few managers fell off early in the year (one didn’t even last half a year).
    Some rank‑and‑file sellers ran away. One store even closed in March due to a staff shortage. Supposedly temporary.
    And the customers are dissatisfied.
    So dissatisfied that in a couple of interviews they seriously asked me: “Haven’t they gone bankrupt yet?!”

    ...ahem.
