Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day!
Today, May 22, 2025, the entire crypto community is celebrating the annual Bitcoin Pizza Day holiday. This date is tied to the following story. 15 years ago, Laszlo Hanyecz, one of the first developers involved in Bitcoin’s development, decided to prove that Bitcoin could be used for real purchases without intermediaries. To do this, on May 18 he posted an ad on the Bitcointalk forum, promising to pay 10 000 BTC to anyone who would bring him two pizzas. In a postscript, Laszlo even added that it wasn’t necessary to buy him pizzas — they could be made at home and sent by delivery. The ultimate goal was precisely to pay for them in bitcoins.
From May 18 to May 21, no one responded to the ad; only a few users suggested he try exchanging his Bitcoins for about $41 at the exchange rate at the time through special services. And yet a seller was eventually found. It was Jeremy Sturdivant — a 19-year-old crypto enthusiast who ordered two pizzas from Papa John’s on May 25 and delivered them to Hanyecz. Laszlo, in turn, kept his word and transferred 10 000 BTC to Sturdivant. This transaction can be found on the Bitcoin blockchain. At today’s exchange rate, the purchase of two pizzas cost Laszlo more than one billion dollars, namely $1 093 515 600!!! Interestingly, the transfer fee alone for this amount at the current rate exceeds $108 000.
