One simple architectural element with which the authorities of Venice solved two pressing problems at once
With the help of such architectural elements, known as "Venetian humps" pissotte or anti-Vespasianes, the city authorities of medieval Venice fought against lovers of relieving themselves on the city street in a secluded corner. The shape of these structures was designed so that the stream of urine was reflected off their surface and hit the offender’s feet directly.
In addition, in an era without street lighting, bandits often hid in the dark corners of buildings to attack passersby. The slanted stone projections deprived criminals of the ability to hide in a corner, making them more visible to the city watch.
