Igbo-Ora is a city in southwestern Nigeria where, it seems, the local cook adds some special ingredient to the soup: the birth rate of twins here is so high that even the statistics blush with envy. No wonder this place has unofficially been dubbed the “world capital of twins.”

Perhaps the population has simply accumulated a genetic predisposition to such a phenomenon.

Notably, one of the city’s residents set a peculiar record by giving birth to as many as 8 pairs of twins! In Igbo-Ora, the birth of twins is seen as a great stroke of luck and a heavenly blessing. The city community has established an annual festival that attracts more than a thousand pairs of twins.
