Bartender, repeat! Screwdriver
The history of the famous cocktail “Screwdriver” (Screwdriver) — is a classic “engineer” tale. The most popular version points us to the 1940-50s, to American oil workers who worked on fields in the Persian Gulf (most often mentioning Iran or Saudi Arabia).
In those parts alcohol was strictly regulated, and the social life of the workers took place in rather harsh conditions. As a result, the oil workers came up with a clever scheme: they mixed vodka with orange juice. The juice perfectly masked the spirit smell, and to the eye the drink looked like a regular fresh juice.
Long bar spoons, of course, were not at hand, and the drink had to be stirred carefully. The guys always had their work tools on their belt — ordinary screwdrivers. They used them to stir the cocktail right in the glass.
Thus the cocktail got its name: Screwdriver.
Whether this is true or just a nice bar legend — it’s hard to verify now, but the story has become so entrenched that it turned into the “official” version of the name’s origin. In short, when you mix this drink, you can remember that you are using the legacy of American engineers of the mid‑20th century.
By the way, the recipe is ridiculously simple:
50 ml vodka
100 ml orange juice, preferably freshly squeezed
Stir, add ice and drink. That's all.
