Question(s) to SSD fans

This time HDD.

Why were your beloved SSDs restricted? They're so wonderful!

And where did so many HDDs appear so quickly, if "they're no longer being produced"?

Honestly, I more often heard the rebuke "why are you clinging to those HDDs, just buy an SSD already and stop suffering!" than a rebuke that my nose is crooked.

And indeed, the question about my nose came up far more often than the question about my preferences in hardware for permanent data storage.

I caught the very beginning of the SSD hype.

And the job I had at that time was such that the hard drive was pounding away, and if anything happened it would be nice to completely annihilate the hard disk.

I, in particular, was even more of a fool when it came to hardware back then than I am now, and an instruction like “drill here to completely destroy all information” seemed extremely unreliable to me.

It was easier to get a sufficiently powerful magnet from the basement, spin a screw, and combine them.

Especially when working in an organization that would fire you in a single day for something far less secure at any given excuse.

And then it somehow became a habit.

I don’t know who bought what there, on our new systems we have both SSD and HDD. The latter serve for storing all software except the OS, and basically for  storage and documentation.  Naturally all this is on RAID‑10.

And the reason for such logic is very simple – reliability. The slowness of HDD is compensated by the OS on SSD, and even if it fails – and who cares, we mount an image and move on. And for file washing, in my opinion, there’s nothing better than HDD – yes, it’s still slower than SSD, but here you need capacity, not speed, and we have different capacities: 8 TB is just one array cell. I don’t even want to imagine how much such an SSD would cost.
